William was deeply saddened yesterday to learn that Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans had died. Mary was a dedicated supporter of the arts and education who always worked to move North Carolina forward.

She was the great-niece of Duke University's founder, James Buchanan Duke. William Branson's family had been friends with Mary for generations, beginning with William's grandfather. 

William has created many portraits for her family through the years, including the portrait of Mary, above, completed in 2001.

William's family is grateful for having known her, and we are all so thankful for her passion and leadership. 

A truly inspring lady. We will miss her greatly.
